Overview
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It spreads easily from person to person through direct contact with the rash or through the air by respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. While often mild in children, chickenpox can be severe in adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include an itchy rash that progresses to fluid-filled blisters, fever, tiredness, and loss of appetite. Most individuals recover within 1 to 2 weeks.
